Bryan' 1/2 Birthday party
Splash Park at the Greene
June 16, 2008

We did field games like sack race, golf ball and spoon race, standing long jump, ball toss, run across the field and pop a baloon and run back, water baloon toss, and tug of war. There was a guy in stilts dressed like the 4th of July who came around twice to make little twisty baloons for everyone. That was really fun. At the end mommy gave out foam swords to everyone and Bryan and his friends had a group sword fight.
You were fascinated by the puddle of water. You love to play with shoes and quickly found a pink pair. Kids are forever having to reclaim their shoes from you. Big kids tend to be understanding and say, "Aw, how cute." Little kids are very serious and oftentimes huffy. They possessively take their shoes from your hands with a rather disapproving demenor.

Dear Breeanna,

Your new word today was "baby". Mommy showed you the sign for it then you said, "beh beh". You were so cute.

We played Where's the Duck (Mommy hides a duck under one of three containers and Breeanna chooses which container it's under.)

Mommy made a Mystery Bag for you (Mommy names things as you take them out.)

And finally mommy carved a tunnel out of a cardboard box for your cars to run through but unfortunately it was so big that you thought it was more fun to sit in the box than to have it as a tunnel.

Love,
Mommy

Dear Breeanna,

Today is so windy. This morning we took a bike ride through the subdivision. Mommy planned out a route that was 3 miles and put Breeanna in the bicycle carriage. We waved at all the neighbors who were busily carring for their lawn and putting in annuals.

Mommy

Dear Breeanna,

Betty Gee with 4 Oaks came to our house for the Parents as Teachers program and brought a farmhouse and animals for us to play with this time. She has come four times so far each with a different activity to promote your development.

In talking with her this visit, she encouraged mommy to write the story of our past. So here is our story...

Long long ago in North Vietnam your great great grandfather was a very wealthy landowner. His land was so vast that birds had to stop in their flight to rest. When the communist party took over the North, they wanted to redistribute his land so they killed him and two of his sons. The third son escaped with his family. That was your great grandfather. They hid in jungle for days eluding the communists that were searching for them. They made their way to the coast and was rescued by an American Red Cross ship that took them to the South. Greatgrandfather built a house out of bamboo sticks for his wife and seven children. It was very hard to find a job because Vietnam was a third world country that was mostly agricultural.

Greatgrandfather had a very hard time fitting in with other people because he felt that he superior in many ways.

One year during the hurricane season a storm swept away their house.

When grandma was three years old, her mother passed away. Greatgrandfather turned to alcohol to console his misery.

Grandma's life was very hard because greatgrandfather favored his two sons and treated the girls badly. It was common to beat children in Vietnam and grandma got her share. I don't think she could do anything right in his eyes. Unfortunately that's a legacy that she has passed on.

Grandma's life was not easy. She told mommy that at night when she slept, rats would come and bite her. She often went hungry and even dug through trash for food.

When grandma was eleven years old, she was sent away to work as a servant to support the family.

She married a French/Vietnamese soldier who was your grandfather. He died even before mommy was born.

So that is our story.

Love,
Mommy

Dear Breeanna,

Today you had so much fun at the park.

I ran after you for most of the hour. Two little girls came and sat with you after a while. One girl handed you flowers and grass and mulch. You took it and passed it to another girl. It touched my heart how easily accepted you are to your peers. I had a hard time fitting in when I was a little girl. This moment means so much to me. I guess just knowing you won't feel the pain of being alone and an outsider.

Mommy
