I, Too, Am America
Today for morning homeschooling, our family read Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: The Red Headed League by Arthur Conan Doyle.
Poems were Oh Captain! My Captain! and I Hear America Singing by Walt Whitman.
Also, I, Too by Lanston Hughes.
I, too, sing America
I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen. When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.
Tomorrow,
I'll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody will dare
Say to me,
"Eat in the kitchen,"
Then.
Besides,
They'll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed--
I, too, am America.
I am proud to be American, a country that can right its wrongs.
